World Animal Day - Welttierschutztag

Unsere beiden Racker haben es gut! Aber es gibt so viele Tiere, die unsagbar leiden. An erster Linie denkt man an den Schutz bedrohter Arten. Aber dieses Jahr will ich vor allem an unsere Nutztiere denken. Auch wenn ihr Leben nur kurz ist und nur dem Zwecke unserer Ernährung dient, haben sie die grausame Haltung nicht verdient, die leider immer noch üblich und standard ist. Ich habe dieses Jahr unseren Haushalt und unsere Ernährung umgestellt und kaufe und lebe bio und grün. Für mich, uns, die Tiere, die Umwelt.

Our two rascals are doing well! But there are so many animals which suffer unspeakably. In the first place one thinks of protecting endangered species. But this year I think of our livestock. Even though their life is short and only serves the purposes of our diet, they do not deserve the cruel keeping that is unfortunately still common and standard. This year I have rearranged our budget and our food and I buy and live organic and green. For me, us, the animals, the environment.

Ja, es geht! Hund und Katze leben gut miteinander. Unser Hund Benno war 3 Jahre alt, als Kätzchen Kitty als Baby ins Haus kam. Von seiner Seite war es Liebe auf den ersten Blick! Sie ... mag ihn auch ;)

Yes, it works! Dog and cat can live together well. Our dog Benno was 3 years old when cat Kitty came as a baby into the house. From his side it was love at first sight! She... likes him too ;)

Almost Forgot - Beinahe vergessen

... hätte ich meine Häkelarbeiten. Die Styroporplatten stehen in der Werkstatt meines Mannes und dort habe ich sie, nachdem ich meine Spitzendeckchen zum Spannen draufgenadelt hatte, auch stehen gelassen. Gestern habe ich sie wiederentdeckt ;) Ich nähe die Motive als Deko auf Täschchen. Wie ihr an dem Schatten seht, den die Stecknadeln werfen, haben wir immer noch traumhaft warmes und sonniges Wetter. Die letzten Tage und Wochen lassen uns fast den miesen Sommer vergessen.

... I have my crocheting. The polystyrene sheets are in my husbands workshop where I left it after I had pinned my lace doilies for blocking. Yesterday I discovered them again ;) I sew the doilies on pouches as deco. As you can see on the shadows of the pins, we still have fabulous warm and sunny weather. The last few days and weeks let us almost forget the lousy summer.

Zucchini Mix Sweet-and-Sour

OK, das ist jetzt eins meiner Lieblingsrezepte. Schneller und leckerer geht's gar nicht. Ich habe aber immer noch eine Menge Zucchinis, zum Glück halten die sich so lange.

OK, now this is one of my favorite recipes. It’s quick and tasty. I still have a lot of zucchini, good that they keep very long.

Zucchini Mix Sweet-and-Sour

1 kg (2,2 lb) zucchini

2-3 onions

3 carrots

2 paprika peppers

3 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

½ teaspoon pepper corns

1 teaspoon curry powder

100 g (0,22 lb) sugar

some dried dill

some lemon juice

500 ml (16,91 oz or 2,11 cup) water

450 ml (15,22 oz or 1,9 cup) vinegar

200 ml (6,76 oz or 0,85 cup) apple juice

Put water, vinegar and apple juice in a large pot. Bring to a boil, add sugar and spices. Add chopped zucchini, carrots, onions and peppers, bring to a boil again. Fill the vegetable hot in jars and seal immediately.

It's Time To Say Goodbye

Unser geliebtes Auto geht in den wohlverdienten Ruhestand. Immer wieder konnten wir es überreden doch noch zu verlängern, aber jetzt ist es soweit. Unser Citroen Xsara Break TDi, BJ 1999, das beste Auto, das wir (seit 2002) bis jetzt hatten, wird uns noch diese Woche verlassen.

Our beloved car goes into a well-deserved retirement. Again and again we could persuade it to prolong its stay, but now it's time. Our CitroenXsara Break TDi, 1999 model, the best car we ever had (since 2002) until now will leave us this week.

Mit diesem Auto haben wir unsere Kleine nach der Geburt nach Hause gefahren, mit diesem Auto haben wir unsere Kitty geholt, unser Benno liebt es im Kofferraum zu schlafen, und Kitty kuschelt gerne auf der warmen Motorhaube, es hat brav unseren Anhänger mit schweren Lasten gezogen und hat nie Extras aus der Autowerkstätte verlangt und ist soweit gefahren. Ach, was bist du weit gefahren! Meinem Mann blutet das Herz und wir werden dich auch vermissen.

With this car we went home from the hospital after birth with our little girl, with this car we went and got our Kitty, our dog Benno loved to sleep there in the trunk, and Kitty snuggled on the warm hood, it has pulled our trailer with heavy loads and has never asked for extras from the car repair shop and went so far. Oh boy, you really went far! (227483 miles) My husbands heart bleeds and we will miss you too.

How Do You Store Your Patterns? - Wie lagert ihr eure Schnittmuster?

Ich meine jetzt nicht die Papierschnittmustervorlagen aus den Zeitschriften (die kann man ja wieder auf A4 zusammenlegen), sondern die vielen einzelnen Schnittteilchen, die man ausgeschnitten hat. Legt ihr die zusammen? Seit ich die Schnittvorlagen auf Folie ausgeschnitten habe, liegen sie auf dem Esstisch herum und harrten einer vernünftigen Lagerung. Tja, und ganz plötzlich, hatte ich die für mich richtige Idee. Alles was man dazu braucht, sind Drahtkleiderbügel und Wäscheklammern. Tadaaa!

I don’t mean the paper pattern templates from magazines (which you can put back together to magazine size), but the many individual pattern pieces, which has been cut out. Fold them? Since I've cut out the templates on film they are lying on the table and waited for a reasonable storage. Well, all of a sudden, I had the right idea for me. Everything you need are wire hangers and clothespins. Tadaaa!

Ein weiteres Shirt für mein Mädel ist fertig. Das macht soviel Spaß! Obwohl mich meine Ovi gestern etwas geärgert hat. Zuerst riss immer der zweite Faden, weiß nicht wie oft ich neu eingefädelt habe, mit dem Resultat, dass ich jetzt zwar im Schlaf einfädeln kann, aber der Faden immer noch riss. Also gegoogelt und da fand ich dann auch die Lösung für mein Problem. Einfach mal die Nadeln austauschen, das stand zwar auch im Handbuch, aber ich vertraute dann doch den Mädels im Netz. Und gegen Abend ärgerte mich dann noch der Rollsaum, alles richtig eingestellt, aber das Ergebnis war nicht so wie es sein sollte. Da hatte ich dann genug. Heute morgen setzte ich mich wieder hin und machte nochmal ein Probestück und siehe da alles paletti. Ich hatte die Einstellungen nicht geändert!? 

Another shirt for my girl is ready. It's so much fun! Although I was annoyed by my serger yesterday. First the second thread broke off all the time, don’t know how many times I re-threaded with the result that I can threading my serger on my head, but the thread still broke. So I googled and I found the solution to my problem. Simply replace the needles, which was also the manuals advice but I trusted rather the girls on the net. And in the evening the rolled edge made me angry, everything is set correctly but the result was not as it should be. Since then I had enough. This morning I sat down again and made another sample piece and see everything is ok. I hadn’t changed the settings!?

Zucchini-Antipasto

Dieses Jahr kann ich über den Zucchiniberg, den ich geerntet habe gar nicht drüber schauen. Und es kommen immer noch welche. Wir lieben ja schon immer Zucchinisuppe mit kleingeschnittenen Frankfurter (Wiener) Würstel und Kartoffeln. Aber irgendwann will man keine Suppe mehr und der eingefrorene Vorrat reicht auch bis nächstes Jahr. Also muss was Neues her und ich habe dieses tolle, super schnelle und einfache Zucchini-Antipasto-Rezept ausprobiert und es schmeckt sooo lecker! Ich habe allerdings 1/3 der Menge Essig durch Wasser ersetzt und schmeckt immer noch super. Und ich denke das Rezept ist flexibel genug, dass man noch andere Gewürze dazugeben kann.

This year I can not look over the zucchini mountain I've harvested. And there is still no end. We love zucchini soup with chopped Frankfurter (Vienna) Sausage and potatoes. But at some point you want no more soup and my frozen stock is huge. So there have to be a new recipe and I've tried an amazing, superquick and easy recipe and it tastes sooo yummy! However, I replaced 1/3 the amount of vinegar with water and still tastes great. And I think the recipe is flexible enough to add some other spices. So here it is:

1 kg (2,2 lb) Zucchini, chopped as small as you like

375 ml (1,59 cup or 12,68 oz) apple vinegar

375 ml (1,59 cup or 12,68 oz) olive oil

5 cloves of garlic, sliced

2 onions, sliced

12 fresh leaves of basil

2 teaspoon salt

pepper

Put all ingredients together in a pot and bring to a boil. After 5 minutes of cooking time take off the fire and fill immediately into clean sterilized jars. Wait short until the oil comes up by gently tapping on the table, shake Zucchini getting into shape, so that no air bag is in between. Close immediately.

Crochet Flowers and No Chain Crochet - Häkelblume und Häkeln ohne Luftmaschen

Mein Mädchen bekommt wieder ein Shirt und auf das Shirt sollen wieder Blümchen appliziert werden. Im Netz habe ich diese süßen Häkelblümchen gefunden. Anleitungen für die Blätter findet man auf YouTube, wenn man das Stichwort 'Häkelblätter' eingibt.

Start: 6 Lm, zu einem Ring schließen.

1. Reihe:

2 Lm, 23 Stäbchen in den Ring, Reihe schließen mit einer Kettm.
2. Reihe:

4 Lm, 1 Stb in die Kettm der vorherigen Reihe, 1 Lm * 2 Maschen überspringen, in die 3. M: 1 Stb, 2 Lm, 1 Stb, 1 Lm *; 7x wiederholen von * bis *. Reihe schließen mit einer Kettm in die 2. Lm der 4 Lm vom Anfang der Reihe.
Reihe 3:

2 Lm, 1 Stb, 2 Lm, 2 Stb unter den 2 Lm-Bogen der vorherigen Reihe, 1 fM unter die 1 Lm der Vorrunde. * 2 Stb, 2 Lm, 2 Stb wie zuvor; 1 fM *.  7x wiederholen von * bis *. Reihe schließen mit einer Kettm in die 2. Lm vom Anfang.
4. Reihe:

kein Aufbau mit Lm wie zuvor; direkt 3 Stb, 1 Lm, 3 Stb in den Lm-Bogen der vorherigen Reihe, 1 fM vor der fM der vorherigen Reihe und 1 fM danach (unterhalb der Maschen einstechen). Wiederholen 8x und schließen mit einer Kettm.

Manchmal braucht man ein Häkelstück, das genau passen muss. Meistens fange ich dann viele Male an, weil ich nicht weiß, wie viele Luftmaschen ich anschlagen muss, um soundsoviel cm zu bekommen. Wie ihr vielleicht auf dem Foto gesehen habt, mache ich hier eine Reihe feste Maschen ohne Luftmaschenkette. Also ich fand das absolut fantastisch, als ich das im Netz gefunden habe.

Sometimes you need a chrocheted piece that must fit exactly. Usually I start many times because I don’t know how many chains I need to get the exact inches. As you might have seen in the photo, I'm doing a series of single crochet stitches with no chain. So I thought it was absolutely fantastic as I have found the instruction in the net.

Plum Jam - Zwetschkenmarmelade

Dieses Jahr trugen die Bäume nicht besonders gut, aber für etwas Zwetschkenmarmelade (Pflaumenkonfitüre) reichte es. Auf dem Bild sieht man auch mein uraltes Geschirrtuch, das ich von meiner Oma vor über 20 Jahren bekommen habe. Und seitdem ist es in Gebrauch, die Qualität ist spitze. 

This year the trees had not much fruits but enough for some plum jam. On the picture you can also see my very old dish towel I got from my grandmother over 20 years ago. And since then it is in use, the quality is fabulous.

Indian Summer - Altweibersommer

Ist ja lustig, dass in Wikipedia 'Altweibersommer' auf englisch in 'Indian Summer' übersetzt wird. Also, liebes Wiki, das geht ja wohl gar nicht. Ein schöner Blätterwald hat ja nun nichts mit Spinnweben zu tun.
Geht's euch auch so, dass einem klar ist, dass Spinnen nützlich und harmlos und eigentlich ein Wunder der Natur sind, aber trotzdem jagen sie einem einen kalten Schauer über den Rücken und man will sie einfach nicht da haben, wo man gerade selber ist?

So you can see both terms only have the season fall in common.
Do you feel the same? It’s clear to me that spiders are useful and harmless and really are a wonder of nature but nevertheless they chase me a cold shiver down my back and I don't want them where I am at the moment.

Aber meiner Kleinen gefällt es und das ist das einzige, das für mich zählt.

Als ich vor einiger Zeit mein Lavendelbeet durchjätete, fand ich diese Pflanze dazwischen. Sie ist einfach zu schön zum Ausreißen. Kennt jemand den Namen dieser Blume?

Photo Deco

Das Spielhaus meiner Kleinen ist im Garten vom Haus aus nicht zu sehen und daher fühlt sie sich dort manchmal etwas einsam. Also haben wir Fotos ausgesucht (von Eltern, Hund, Katze und bester Freundin), sind zum nächsten Drogeriemarkt gegangen und haben sie dort gleich ausgedruckt. 

The playhouse of my little one in the garden is not visible from the house and therefore she feels a bit lonely there sometimes. So we selected photos (of parents, pets and best friend), went to the nearest drugstore and havethem printed out there immediately.

Summertime

Heute ist es so richtig heiß! Ich hätte fast vergessen wie das ist, wenn die Luft flimmert und man lieber im Haus bleibt. Aber wir haben im Garten einen Easy Pool stehen, der sich auch an den wenigen sonnigen Tagen auszahlt. Unseren ersten Easy Pool haben wir für 50 Euro gekauft und hielt 4 Jahre. Das ist jetzt der zweite und den haben wir auch schon 2 Jahre, trotz Hund und Katze hat der Ring oben bis jetzt nur 2 Flicken. Heute hat das Wasser 28°C und wenn es weiterhin so heiß ist, wird es noch wärmer. Es ist herrlich, wenn man ewig planschen kann, ohne dass einem kalt wird. Ich drapiere zwei Schwimmnudeln immer so um mich herum, dass ich im Wasser schwebe. Sobald die Wassertemperatur aber 30°C erreicht, hänge ich den Gartenschlauch rein, der 14 Grad kühles Brunnenwasser reinpumpt und wieder etwas abkühlt. Da meine Kleine viel herumspritzt, muss ich sowieso von Zeit zu Zeit auffüllen. So und jetzt tauche ich wieder unter!

Today it is really hot! I almost forgot what it's like when the air shimmers and you prefer to remain in the house. But in the garden we have an Easy Pool that pays off well on the few sunny days. Our first easy pool we bought for 70$ and last for 4 years. This is now the second pool and we have it since 2 years, in spite of dog and cat the ring only has two patches. Today the water is 82F and if it is still hot, it will be even warmer. It is wonderful when you can splash around forever without getting cold. I drape our two swim noodles around me that I'm floating in the water. Once the water temperature reaches 86F I hang the garden hose in the pool that is pumping pure cool (57F) spring water in and cool down the water a little. Since my little one is splashing around a lot, I have to fill up anyway from time to time. So and now I am ducking and enjoying this summerday!

Terrific Trifle - Toller Trifle

Mein lieber Mann hatte am Wochenende Geburtstag. Und es gab da schon lange etwas, das ich ausprobieren wollte, weil es einfach so toll ausschaut. Ein Trifle! Das ist ein Dessert ursprünglich aus England.

From Hen Coop to Playhouse - Vom Hühnerstall zum Spielhaus

Endlich kann ich auch mal eine Vorher/Nachher Geschichte zeigen. Und zwar unser großes Sommerprojekt! Unser Haus ist über 100 Jahre alt und eines der vielen Nebengebäude ist auch ein alter Hühnerstall, den wir nicht benutzten. Da aber gleich die Sandkiste daneben liegt, wollte ich den Stall schon immer einer Kindernutzung zuführen. 

Finally I can show you a before/after story. Our big summer project! The house we live in is over 100 years old and one of the many outbuildings is an old chicken coop, we do not use. However, since the sandbox is next to it, I always wanted to make something for my girlie out of the coop.

Mushrooms - Pilze

Wir waren im Wald Pilze sammeln. In Österreich ist aber der Terminus "Schwammerl suchen" am gebräuchlichsten. Also ab in den Wald. Wir waren auf der Suche nach Eierschwammerln (Pfifferlinge) und die wollten erst mal gefunden werden. Das ist wie eine Schnitzeljagd ohne Hinweise. Sehr spannend, ich liebe es! Auf dem Bild seht ihr, das wir eine Menge Pilze fanden, zwar wunderschöne, aber nicht so genießbar ;) Meine Kleine zeigt auf eines der wenigen Eierschwammerl, die wir fanden. Aber auch einige Steinpilze (Herrenpilze) sprangen in unsere Tasche. Zu Hause gab es dann Geröstete Schwammerl mit Ei und Semmelknödel. Lecker!

We were collecting mushrooms in the forest. In Austria, however, the term "looking for mushrooms" is the most common. So off into the woods. We were in search of chanterelles and they hid very well. It's like a scavenger hunt without clues. Very exciting, I love it! On the picture you can see, we found a lot of mushrooms, though beautiful but toxical :) My little one points to one of the few chanterelles we found. But even some edible boletus jumped into our bag. At home I made Roasted Chanterelle Mushrooms with bread dumplings. Yummy!

Ready To Wear - Fertig zum Anziehen

Ich hab's geschafft. Mein erstes Shirt ist genäht. Ging an sich ganz schnell, wenn ich mal die richtige Sticheinstellung für die Overlock gefunden hatte. Meine Kleine ist zwar sehr schlank, aber ich habe die Antonia doch größer zugeschnitten, soll ja die ganze Langarm-Saison passen. Meiner Kleinen gefällt's ganz gut!

I've done it. My first shirt is sewn. It was going very quickly if I had found the right spot for setting the serger. My little one is very slim, but I have tailored the shirt larger so it will fit the whole long-sleeve season. My girlie like it very much! 

I Am Happy About ... - Ich freue mich über ...

... meine neueste Errungenschaft. Ist sie nicht toll? Ich bin total begeistert. Die hübsche Wäschebüste leistet mir jetzt in meinem Nähzimmer Gesellschaft.

Bügelperlen sind ein tolles Spielzeug, meine Kleine liebt es Bildchen zu machen sowohl im Kindergarten als auch zu Hause. 

Iron-on-Beads are a great toy. My girlie loves to make the figures both at home and in the kindergarten. 

Cut To Size - Shirt Zuschnitt

Ich habe das Antonia Shirt zugeschnitten. Die Farbaufteilung war echt harte Arbeit. Auf einem Blog habe ich gesehen, dass man die Schnitte mit Folie kopieren kann. Also habe ich im Baumarkt Schwerlastsäcke gekauft (5 Stk. Packung für etwa 2,50€) und auseinander geschnitten. Die habe ich dann über das Schnittmuster gelegt und mit einem wasserfesten Stift abgezeichnet. Ich habe etwas weniger als einen Sack gebraucht.
Dann war ich noch in der Werkstatt meines Mannes und habe mir die größten und schwersten Muttern ausgeliehen, um die Folie auf dem Stoff zu beschweren. Bis jetzt hat alles ganz gut geklappt. Mal sehen, ob das mit dem Nähen auch so einfach geht. 

I've cut to size the shirt. The color distribution was really hard work. On a blog I've seen that you can copy the pattern with transparency film. So I bought at the hardware store heavy plastic bags (5 pieces for about 3.50$) and cut apart. I have then placed it over the pattern and draw the lines with a waterproof pen. I needed a little less than one bag.
And I was in the workshop of my husband and I took the biggest and heaviest nuts to weight down the film on the fabric. So far everything has worked out quite well. Let's see if this also will be easy with the sewing.

Bread Maker - Brotbackmaschine

Den Brotbackautomat bekam ich geschenkt und wurde anfangs auch häufig benutzt, dann stand er lange Zeit nur herum. Durch etliche Lebensmittelskandale in diesem Jahr habe ich unseren Haushalt so ziemlich auf Bio umgestellt und auch mehr im Garten angepflanzt und unseren Fleischkonsum drastisch reduziert (sehr zum Leidwesen meines Mannes, obwohl er die ganze Aktion unterstützt und auch mit trägt). Da fiel mir natürlich auch wieder meine Brotbackmaschine ein, die ich seit dem Frühjahr regelmäßig verwende. Viele von euch backen Brot einfach so ohne Hilfsmittel, aber bei mir klappt das nicht so gut. Also das ist sie, ein eher günstiges und schlichtes Modell. Am Ende des Posts gibt es noch eine andere interessante Preisdarstellung! 

The breadmaker was a gift for me some years ago and was used frequently in the beginning, then it was only around for a long time. Through a number of food scandals this year, I've converted to organic food, planted a lot veggies in the garden and drastically reduced our consumption of meat (much to the chagrin of my husband although he supports the whole action). Then I remembered my bread machine and I used it regularly since spring. Many of you bake bread without assistance but for me it works this way. So this is a rather cheap and simple model. At the end of this post there is another stunning price calculation!

Ich habe sie schon ausprobiert und bis jetzt komme ich ganz gut zurecht. Das erste Projekt steht schon am Start und ich hoffe, ich habe mir nicht zuviel zugemutet. Nun wir werden sehen ;)

Gekauft habe ich sie beim Händler in der Stadt, zwar teurer als im Internet, aber ich habe schon zwei Einschulungen gehabt und ich habe noch einen Termin offen, wo mir der Rollsaum erklärt wird, aber ich glaube gestern beim Herumprobieren, habe ich das schon raus bekommen. Und beim Preisfeilschen habe ich (naja mein Mann) noch eine tolle Transporttasche und zwei Packungen Nähnadeln rausgeholt.

I've already tried it and so far I'm getting along quite well. The first project is already at the start and I hope I have not expected too much. 

We'll see ;) I bought it at the dealer in the city, though more expensive than in the internet, but I've had two lessons and I have an appointment open where I will learn the rolled hem. But I think yesterday I figured it out with trial and error. And after price haggling, I even got a high quality transportation bag and two packages of sewing needles.

Mullein - Königskerze

Ist das nicht eine fantastische Blume? Demnächst wird dieses Stück auch in Rasen umgewandelt, aber die Königskerze (Verbascum) darf natürlich stehen bleiben bis sie verblüht ist und die Samen werde ich einsammeln. Vielleicht kann ich sie ja woanders ansiedeln. Meine Kleine ist jetzt 115 cm groß, und mir kommt vor die Pflanze ist mehr als doppelt so hoch. 

Isn’t that flower fantastic? This place will be converted into lawn soon but the mullein (Verbascum) remains until it has finished flowering and I will pick up the seeds. Maybe I can settle it somewhere else. My little one is now 3,77 ft tall and it seems the plant is more than twice as high.

Flower Parade - Blumenparade

Nach einer traumhaft schönen, sonnig heißen Woche, beginnt dieser Montag regnerisch. Zeit mal wieder mit der Kamera durch den Garten zu schlendern. Manche Blüten sehen durch den Regen leicht zerknautscht aus, aber schön sind sie doch.

Garland - Wimpelkette

Ich habe meine erste Wimpelkette genäht und es hat total Spaß gemacht. Diese hier kommt in das Spielhaus meiner Kleinen als Deko.

I sewed my first bunting and it was totally fun. This one will be deco for the play house of my girlie.

Apricot Cake - Marillenkuchen

Die Marillen (Aprikosen) sind reif! Wir haben fünf Marillenbäume im Garten, uralte Hochstämme, die im besten Jahr 400 kg abwarfen. Und in einem schlechten Jahr immer noch zuviel. Da ich vom letzten Jahr noch Marillen im Gefrierschrank habe, brauche ich dieses Jahr keine. Nachbarn wurden schon teilweise bedacht und demnächst kommen Freunde und Familie zum Klauben und Pflücken.

Apricots are ripe! We have five apricot trees in the garden, old highstrains, in the best year the harvest was about 880 pounds. And in a bad year there are still too much fruits. As I have from last years harvest apricots in the freezer, I do not need and want any this year. Neighbors have already been considered and soon friends and family will come to pick and collect.
