Monatscollage Oktober 2026

Monatsrückblick für Oktober: 

1. Im Oktober haben wir wieder ein paar Tage in der Südsteiermark verbracht. Im Herbst ist diese Landschaft zum Niederknien schön und ...
2. ... bei Schilcher Sturm und Maroni kann man die Zeit so richtig schön genießen.
3. Meine Tochter (21) hatte Geburtstag und sie wünschte sich Genuss und Spaß im Wiener Prater mit Freunden und Familie. Köstliches Essen in einem lokalen Bio-Restaurant und dann ...
4. ... Spaß mit einigen Fahrgeschäften. Es wurden aber weder die Hochschaubahn noch das Riesenrad ausgewählt, sondern die Liliputbahn. Die liebte sie schon als kleines Mädchen.
5. Mein Mann bekam zum Vatertag eine Überwachungskamera, die er in den Hofgarten direkt am Haus richtete. Seitdem haben wir viel Freude daran zu sehen, was nachts so durch den Garten streift. Viele Insekten, Fledermäuse, Katzen, Marder, ein Fuchs und vor ein paar Tagen dann das - drei Rehe. Dazu muss man sagen, dass wir direkt im Ortskern leben. Unser sehr langer Garten grenzt an ein Feld und an die Umfahrungsstraße, dann an das Gelände der Feuerwehr und die örtlichen Sportanlagen (Tennis- und Fußballplatz) und dann erst kommt der Wald. Und anscheinend hat der Zaun um unser Grundstück irgendwo ein Loch. 
6. Gerade noch rechtzeitig zur Heizsaison hat uns ein benachbarter Landwirt Brennholz geliefert. Mann und Tochter haben den Haufen in Nullkommanix ins Holzlager gestapelt.
7. Ach und schaut mal, was ich in einem Schaufenster für Motorradausstattung gesehen habe. Ist das nicht herrlich? So kann man Schaufensterpuppen auch mal drapieren. Wäre was für Valentinstag. Gefällt mir sehr.
8. Und dann war da Halloween. Keine Sache, wo wir mitmachen. Dennoch habe ich meine Tochter im Einkaufszentrum zu einem Foto genötigt. Spinnen sind ihr Endgegner. Sie hat immer noch nicht die Szenen von Harry Potter Teil 2 im Wald gesehen.

A retrospect of October: 

1. In October, we spent a few days in Southern Styria. In autumn, this landscape is breathtakingly beautiful, and...
2. ...with some Schilcher Sturm (young wine) and roasted chestnuts, it’s the perfect way to truly enjoy the moment.
3. My daughter (21) had a birthday, and she wished for a day of fun and indulgence at the Vienna Prater with friends and family. We enjoyed a delicious meal at a local organic restaurant, followed by...
4. ...some fun on the amusement rides. Instead of the roller coaster or the Ferris wheel, she chose the Liliputbahn (miniature railway)—something she’s loved since she was a little girl.
5. For Father’s Day, my husband received a surveillance camera, which he set up in the backyard right by the house. Since then, we’ve had a lot of fun watching what wanders through the garden at night. We’ve seen plenty of insects, bats, cats, martens, a fox, and - a few days ago - three deer! It’s worth noting that we live right in the town center. Our very long garden borders a field and a bypass road, followed by the fire station grounds and local sports facilities (tennis and soccer courts), with the forest lying further beyond. It seems there must be a hole in the fence around our property somewhere.
6. Just in time for the heating season, a local farmer delivered some firewood. My husband and daughter stacked the entire pile into the woodshed in no time at all.
7. Oh, and look at what I spotted in the window of a motorcycle gear shop - isn’t it wonderful? That’s one way to style a mannequin! It would be perfect for Valentine’s Day. I absolutely love it.
8. And then there was Halloween - not really our thing, but I still managed to talk my daughter into posing for a photo at the shopping mall. Spiders are her ultimate nemesis! She still hasn’t seen the scenes in the forest from the second Harry Potter film.

12tel Blick 2026 - Oktober

Hach, der Oktober war traumhaft schön und so warm. Dennoch müssen wir uns auf den Winter vorbereiten, daher sieht man auf meinem Bild auch einen Haufen Brennholz, den uns ein benachbarter Landwirt geliefert hat. Natürlich ist er schon ins Holzlager schön aufgestapelt worden, bereit für den Kachelofen. Die Farben der Blätter sind wunderbar und seit es wieder regelmäßig regnet, ist auch das Grün nochmal durchgeschossen. Herbst absolute Lieblingsjahreszeit! 

Oh, October was absolutely gorgeous and so warm. Still, we have to get ready for winter—which is why you can see a pile of firewood in my photo, delivered by a local farmer. Naturally, it’s already been neatly stacked in the wood shed, all set for the tiled stove. The autumn foliage is stunning, and with the return of regular rain, the greenery has had a fresh burst of growth. Autumn is hands down my favorite season! 

Bei einem Gartenrundgang habe ich überraschenderweise blühende Margeriten im Raureif gefunden. Die blühen normalerweise im Mai. Eine meiner Lieblingsblühpflanzen ist der Borretsch. Den habe ich gerne im Gemüsebeet, weil er ein Bienenmagnet ist und die Bienchen gleich meine Gemüsepflanzen zuverlässig mit bestäuben und er hat so hübsche Blüten. Die Königskerze hat auch noch vereinzelt Blüten und Rosen blühen bis zum Frost.

While walking through the garden, I was surprised to find blooming marguerite daisies covered in hoarfrost—they usually bloom in May. One of my favorite flowering plants is borage; I like having it in the vegetable patch because it’s a magnet for bees, which then reliably pollinate my vegetable plants, and besides, it has such pretty blossoms. The mullein also still has the occasional flower, and the roses continue to bloom until the first frost.

RahmenLOS - Zahl

Elfi von 11iS Kartenblog hat ein neues Wort in ihrer Rahmenlos Challenge vorgegeben, und zwar das Wort 'Zahl'. Ich habe es in EINZAHLWORT abgewandelt. Also Google sagt dazu: "Ein Einzahlwort (fachsprachlich Singularetantum) ist ein Substantiv, das nur in der Einzahl (Singular) vorkommt und keine normale Mehrzahlform (Plural) hat." Da gibt es wirklich viele Wörter, ich hab mich für konkrete Worte entschieden (und für solche, wo ich eigene Fotos dazu hatte), es gibt auch noch abstrakte wie Durst, Glück, Liebe, Ruhe, Chaos, All, Gesundheit, etc. 

Schnee - snow

Elfi from the '11iS Kartenblog' has set a new theme for her frameless picture challenge: the word 'Zahl' (number/numeral). I’ve adapted this into the term 'Einzahlwort' (a noun that exists only in the singular). According to Google, an 'Einzahlwort'—technically known as a *singulare tantum*—is a noun that appears exclusively in the singular and lacks a standard plural form. There are actually many such words; I’ve chosen to focus on concrete examples (and on those where I had my own photos to go with them), though there are also abstract ones—such as thirst, happiness/luck, love, calm, chaos, the universe, health, and so on. I’m not sure if the same linguistic concept applies in English, but I think the idea is clear enough!

Nähmaschine benutzen

Meine Arbeiten dieses Monats zeichnen sich durch viele gerade Nähte aus. Da wäre mal ein neuer Bezug für das Zierkissen auf dem Sofasessel im Zimmer meiner Tochter. Das ist einer ihrer Lieblingsstoffe mit ihrer Lieblingsfarbe Türkis. Aus diesem Stoff habe ich ihr auch schon eine Tasche genäht. Jetzt ist er leider aufgebraucht. Den Reißverschluss habe ich versteckt eingenäht und einen passenden Patch habe ich auch in meinem Fundus gefunden.

Using my sewing machine

My projects this month feature a lot of straight seams. For instance, there is a new cover for the decorative cushion on the armchair in my daughter's room. It uses one of her favorite fabrics, featuring her favorite color, turquoise. I had already sewn a bag for her out of this same fabric; unfortunately, I’ve now run out of it. I sewed in a concealed zipper and also found a matching patch in my stash. 

Monatscollage September 2026

Monatsrückblick für September: 

1. Meinen Geburtstag haben wir im Restaurant des Schloss Wartholz in Reichenau/Rax gefeiert. Es war ein herrlicher Tag und ein schöner Ausflug.
2. Dann habe ich dieses Tier auf meinen Küchenfußboden gefunden und dachte im ersten Moment, ein Blatt wäre zum offenen Fenster herein geweht. Aber nein, es ist eine Gottesanbeterin. Ich habe sie vorsichtig wieder ins Grüne gesetzt.
3. Für ein rundes Maturajubiläum kehrte ich in meine Geburtsstadt Linz/Donau zurück und verbrachte mit meinen ehemaligen Mitschülerinnen einen tollen Nachmittag und Abend. Da gehört auch ein Besuch der Lokalszene in der Altstadt dazu, vor allem bei herrlichem Vollmond.
4. Am nächsten Tag besuchten wir auf dem Heimweg die wunderschöne Stadt Steyr. Es war ein warmer Samstag und in der historischen Innenstadt war der Bär los. Absolut sehenswerte kleine Stadt!
5. Einige meiner Topfpflanzen am Fenster mussten umgepflanzt werden und ich dachte ich probiere mal, sie in einen Blumenkasten zu arrangieren. Möglicherweise kommen sie mit den Platzangebot und der Feuchtigkeit/eher Trockenheit besser zurecht, als jeder alleine in einem Topf. Wie gesagt, ein Versuch, aber ich finde das Kisterl zauberhaft. 
6. Ach ja und Herbst. Einfach nur schön. Die Farben, die laue Luft, die angenehmen Temperaturen. Genieße ich momentan sehr.

A retrospect of September: 

1. We celebrated my birthday at the restaurant at Schloss Wartholz in Reichenau an der Rax. It was a glorious day and a lovely trip.
2. Then I found this creature on my kitchen floor; at first, I thought a leaf had blown in through the open window. But no, it was a praying mantis. I carefully placed it back out in the greenery.
3. I returned to my hometown of Linz on the Danube for a milestone high school reunion and spent a wonderful afternoon and evening with my former classmates.That included visiting the local bars and restaurants in the Old Town - especially under a magnificent full moon.
4. The next day, on our way home, we visited the beautiful town of Steyr. It was a warm Saturday, and the historic town center was bustling with activity. It is a charming little town well worth seeing!
5. Some of my potted windowsill plants needed repotting, so I decided to try arranging them in a window box. They might cope better with the available space and moisture levels - or rather, the drier conditions - than they would individually in separate pots. As I said, it’s an experiment, but I think the planter looks delightful.
6. Oh, and autumn. Simply beautiful. The colors, the mild air, the pleasant temperatures - I’m really enjoying it all right now.

12tel Blick 2026 - September

Es ist Herbst und auf meinem Foto sieht man das auf den ersten Blick. Die Blätter der Felsenbirne im Vordergrund sind schon eingefärbt und am rechten Rand der Kastanienbaum des Nachbarn auch. Der Pool wurde wieder eingepackt und das Gemüse wird abgeerntet. Die Zucchinipflanzen habe ich schon entfernt, die letzten Gurken gepflückt. Diese beiden Pflanzen haben trotz des Hitzesommers abgeliefert.

It is autumn, and you can tell at a glance from my photo. The leaves of the juneberry in the foreground have already changed color, as have those of the neighbor's chestnut tree on the right. The pool has been packed away, and the vegetables are being harvested. I have already removed the zucchini plants and picked the last of the cucumbers; both plants produced a great yield despite the hot summer. 

RahmenLOS - Wasser

Bei Elfi von Elfis Kartenblog gibt es eine neue Fotochallenge LinkParty, die RahmenLOS heißt. Elfi gibt ein Thema vor, das ganz beliebig fotografisch umgesetzt werden kann. Also total rahmenlos sozusagen :)

Das Thema Wasser ließ mich sofort an unseren Urlaub auf der schönen Insel Madeira (HIER geht's zum Post) denken. Nicht nur rund um die Insel konnte ich Wasser finden. 

Küstenwasser - Coastal waters

Elfi from Elfis Kartenblog is hosting a new photo challenge called "RahmenLOS" (meaning "frameless" or "without limits"). Elfi sets a theme that can be interpreted and photographed however one likes—completely "frameless," so to speak :)

The theme of water immediately made me think of our vacation on the beautiful island of Madeira (click HERE for the post). It wasn't just around the island that I found water.

Nähmaschine benutzen

Meine Tochter und ich gehen ja gerne in die Therme und nie hatte ich ein passendes Tascherl für meine Haarbürsten. Nach einiger Suche fand ich das kostenlose Schnittmuster Lollie Etui von Sew Simple. Ich habe es innen mit Frottee von einem alten Handtuch gefüttert und eine Schlaufe zum Aufhängen gibt es auch. Love it.

My daughter and I love going to the spa but I never had a suitable little bag for my hairbrushes. After some searching, I found the free "Lollie Etui" pattern by Sew Simple. I lined the inside with terry cloth from an old towel, and I also added a loop for hanging it up. Love it. 

Klosterbibliothek Stift Admont

Im Sommer besuchten wir die weltgrößte Klosterbibliothek des Stiftes Admont. Als wir von unserem fantastischen Urlaub am Wolfgangsee nach Hause fuhren, machten wir einen kleinen Umweg über Admont. Ich habe schon tolle Fotos im Internet gesehen, und im Hinterkopf abgespeichert, dass ich das in Echt sehen wollte. Nun gab es die Gelegenheit dazu. Und es war atemberaubend schön. Einfach nur WOW.

In July we visited the world's largest monastic library, Admont Abbey. On our way home from our fantastic holiday at Lake Wolfgang, we made a small detour to Admont. I'd seen amazing photos online and kept in mind that I wanted to see it in person. Now I finally had the chance. And it was breathtakingly beautiful. Simply WOW. 

Monatscollage August 2026

Monatsrückblick für August: 

1. Endlich flatterte mir ein Kaisermantel Schmetterling (Argynnis paphia) so halbwegs gut vor die Linse. Diese Art war dieses Jahr wirklich das Highlight, was die große Anzahl dieser Falter in unserem Garten betrifft. 
2. Tja und dann landete ein Vogel auf meinem Schreibtischsessel (Gartenrotschwanz - Phoenicurus phoenicurus), sah sich in Ruhe um, störte sich nicht daran, dass ich mit meiner Handykamera auf ihn zielte und nach geraumer Zeit flog er wieder zum Fenster raus.
3. Ich hoffe man erkennt auf den Fotos die Libellen. In einem Hack habe ich gesehen, dass Nachbildungen von Libellen gegen Fliegen helfen sollen. Die Frau im Reel hatte ihr Pferd mit Libellen bestückt, weil es wegen der Fliegenplage fast durchdrehte. Nun wie bei ihr hat der Trick auch am Esstisch auf der Terrasse bei uns geklappt. Die Libellen gibt's im Internet. Vielleicht überlege ich mir noch was wegen der Befestigung. Momentan haben wir sie in Gläser drapiert und sobald sich eine Fliege näherte und die Libellen bemerkte, nahm sie auch schon Reißaus. 
4. Trotz Bedenken wegen Hitze und italienischer Ferienzeit war Grado an der italienischen Adriaküste wieder herrlich. Wassertemperatur lag etwa wie unser Pool bei 30°C. Herausforderung war immer die eiskalte Stranddusche. 
5. Bei der Rückfahrt besuchten wir die wunderschöne Stadt Udine. Die venezianische Altstadt ist beeindruckend. Am Foto sieht man die Piazza della Libertà mit dem Castello Di Udine und dem Torre dell´Orologio. 
6. Bei uns im Einkaufszentrum wird bald eine Bäckerei eröffnen. Um die Bauarbeiten nicht zu sehen oder zu stören wurden wirklich schöne Auslagentafeln im Vintagestil gemacht.
7. In Kärnten ging es wie üblich ein mal im Jahr in den Wald zum Eierschwammerl pflücken (eigentlich abschneiden) und trotz der Dürre fanden wir in Kürze ein Sackerl voll. Reicht aus für ein paar Mahlzeiten. Immer wieder anstrengend, aber schön.
8. Ein Wasserschaden zwang uns Handwerker ins Haus. Unser Haus- und Hofinstallateur war schnell da und behob den Schaden. Allerdings hat er bis jetzt trotz seiner Kontakte keinen Maurer gefunden, der uns das Loch wieder zumacht. O-Ton: zu kleiner Auftrag, zahlt sich nicht aus. Tja was soll man da noch sagen.

A retrospect of August: 

1. Finally, a silver-washed fritillary butterfly (Argynnis paphia) fluttered into view, and I managed to get a decent shot. This species was truly the highlight this year regarding the large number of these butterflies in our garden.
2. Well, and then a bird landed on my desk chair (a common redstart - Phoenicurus phoenicurus), calmly looked around, didn't seem to mind me pointing my phone camera at it, and after a while, flew back out the window.
3. I hope you can see the dragonflies in the picture. I saw in a hack that dragonfly replicas are supposed to help against flies. The woman in the video had decorated her horse with dragonflies because it was going crazy from the fly infestation. Well, just like her, the trick worked for us at the dining table on the patio. You can find the dragonflies online. I might have to figure out a better way to attach them. For now, we've arranged them in glasses, and as soon as a fly approached and noticed one, it took flight. 
4. Despite my concerns about the heat and the Italian holiday season, Grado on the Italian Adriatic coast was wonderful once again. The water temperature was about the same as our pool, around 30°C (86F). The ice-cold beach shower was always a challenge.
5. On the way back, we visited the beautiful city of Udine. The Venetian old town is impressive. The photo shows the Piazza della Libertà with the Castello di Udine and the Torre dell'Orologio.
6. A bakery will soon open in our shopping center. To avoid seeing or disturbing the construction work, they've made some really nice vintage-style display boards.
7. In Carinthia, we went into the woods once a year, as usual, to pick (actually, cut) chanterelles, and despite the drought, we quickly found a bagful. Enough for a few meals. Always tiring, but lovely.
8. A water leak forced us to call in tradespeople. Our regular plumber arrived quickly and fixed the damage. However, despite his contacts, he hasn't yet found a bricklayer to close the hole for us. Quote: "Too small a job, not worth it." Well, what more can you say?

12tel Blick 2026 - August

Im August waren wir sehr umtriebig. Immer wieder mal Kurzurlaube und dann auch noch Handwerker im Haus. Und dann kam wieder ein Thema aufs Tapet, das ich glaubte abgehakt zu haben. Als meine Tochter sich nach dem Fachschulabschluss (der drei Lehrabschlüsse beinhaltete) für eine weitere Lehre entschied, habe ich nicht daran gedacht, dass das auch wieder Schule bedeuten würde, auch wenn nur für 10 Wochen. Also da bin ich wieder, Mutter eines Schulkindes, auch wenn das Kind schon 20 ist. Dennoch Schulsachen einkaufen, Klamotten einkaufen, wo kann sie parken, wo kann sie Mittagessen. Dazu muss sie noch eine neue Sprache lernen. Sie hat sich für Italienisch entschieden. Die lernen wir zu zweit schon ein paar Monate mit einer App. Macht mir mehr Spaß als ihr :) 

Ach ja, jetzt hätte ich ganz vergessen über den 12tel Blick zu reden. August bescherte zwei Regentage und ein paar braune Rasenflecken wurden wieder grün. Die Temperaturen nachts fielen zum Glück unter 20°C und man konnte wieder bei offenen Fenstern schlafen. Aber der Pool hat merklich abgekühlt (zu kühl für mich und Tochterkind), also wird er nächstes Wochenende weggeräumt. Die Luft hat sich verändert, früh morgens riecht es nach Herbst. Ich jedenfalls habe genug Sommer gehabt, für mich eindeutig viel zu heiß. Jetzt freue ich mich auf Herbst und klare frische Luft.

August was a very busy month for us. We took several short trips and then had tradespeople working in the house. And then another issue came up that I thought I'd put behind me. When my daughter decided to do another apprenticeship after graduating from vocational school (which included three vocational qualifications), I hadn't considered that it would mean going back to school, even if only for 10 weeks. So here I am again, the mother of a school-aged child, even though she's already 20. Still buying school supplies, buying clothes, figuring out where she can park, where she can have lunch. On top of that, she has to learn a new language. She's chosen Italian. We've been learning it together for a few months now using an app. I'm enjoying it more than she is :)

Z wie Zwetschke

Die Zwetschke ist nicht unbedingt mein Lieblingsobst, aber wenn mein alter Baum welche abwirft, dann verarbeite ich sie auch. In diesem Trockensommer hat der Baum sich seiner meisten Früchten entledigt, weil er sie nicht genug versorgen konnte. So alte Bäume, die Wurzeln mehrere Meter in die Tiefe haben, kann man nur mit Unmengen von Wasser gießen. Da ich schon meinen Rasen nicht retten konnte, vertraue ich darauf, dass der Baum auf sich selbst schaut und das Nötige tut, um sich am Leben zu erhalten. Auch wenn das heißt, seine Früchte abzuwerfen. 

Zwetschke is for Plum

Plums aren't exactly my favorite fruit, but when my old tree drops some, I use them. This dry summer, the tree has shed most of its fruit because it couldn't supply them with enough water. Trees this old, with roots several meters deep, can only be kept alive with enormous amounts of water. Since I couldn't even save my lawn, I trust that the tree will take care of itself and do what's necessary to survive, even if that means dropping its fruit. 

Jahresprojekt 2026 - Juli

Nähmaschine benutzen

Es haben sich zwei neue (refurbished) eReader bei uns eingefunden, die natürlich eine Schutzhülle brauchten. Diese hier ist für meinen eReader. Schwarze alte Jeans, weiße Spitze, altes Label, lila Punktestoff und innen Volumenvlies. Ist vielleicht etwas größer geraten als gebraucht, aber ich wollte die rückwärtige Tasche nicht zerschneiden. Eine Schlaufe dran und das gute Stück hängt am Regal über meinem Schreibtisch. Ich liebe es.

Using my sewing machine

Two new (refurbished) eReaders have arrived in our home, and of course, they needed protective cases. This one is for my eReader. It's made from old black jeans, white lace, an old label, purple polka dot fabric, and a layer of batting inside. It's perhaps a little bigger than it should be, but I didn't want to cut the back pocket. I added a loop, and now the thing hangs on the shelf above my desk. I love it. 

Monatscollage Juli 2026

Monatsrückblick für Juli: 

1. Wir haben ein paar Tage im Salzkammergut am Wolfgangsee verbracht. Natürlich waren wir auch am Hausberg von St. Wolfgang, am Schafberg.
2. Und wir haben ausgiebig im Wolfgangsee geplanscht. Er war sogar warm genug für uns Frostbeulen. Es war herrlich!
3. Das Bild ist etwas körnig, aber ich glaube man kann erkennen, dass uns ein Reh besucht hat. Es zupfte mal dort und da etwas ab, umkreiste einmal mein Gemüsebeet und wanderte wieder waldwärts davon. Wir haben zwar links und rechts zu den Nachbarn einen Zaun, aber am oberen Ende ist er leider sehr löchrig zum Feld und Wald hin. 
4. Mein Rosenbogen brach zusammen, weil der untere Teil total verrostet war. Aber der obere Teil dient dem Butternutkürbis als Rankhilfe.
5. Wir lieben Zucchini und momentan ernähren wir uns von Zucchinikuchen mit Frischkäsetopping.
6. Brombeeren und Tomaten werden am laufendem Band geerntet.
7. Wir haben die Schallaburg und die Ausstellung über die 80er Jahre besucht. HIER geht's zum Post.
8. Und wir haben das Stift Admont besucht, in dem sich die weltgrößte Klosterbibliothek befindet. Wenn man sowas Schönes sieht, fragt man sich, wie es soweit kommen konnte, dass es 40 genormte Grautöne im RAL-Farbsystem gibt. 

Die Monatscollage kann man bei die Birgitt abgeben und auch viele andere anschauen. 

A retrospect of July: 

1. We spent a few days in the Salzkammergut region (Austria) at Lake Wolfgang. Of course, we also visited St. Wolfgang's local mountain, the Schafberg.
2. And we splashed around in Lake Wolfgang extensively. It was even warm enough for us cold-weather wimps. It was wonderful!
3. The picture is a bit grainy, but I think you can see that a deer paid us a visit. It nibbled a bit here and there, circled my vegetable patch once, and then wandered off again towards the woods. We do have a fence on both sides separating us from the neighbors, but unfortunately, the top of it is very full of holes where it meets the field and forest.
4. My rose arch collapsed because the lower part was completely rusted. But the upper part serves as a trellis for the butternut squash.
5. We love zucchini, and at the moment we're living on zucchini cake with cream cheese topping.
6. Blackberries and tomatoes are being harvested non-stop.
7. We visited Schallaburg Castle and the exhibition about the 80s. Click HERE for the post.
8. And we visited Admont Abbey, which houses the world's largest monastic library. When you see something so beautiful, you wonder how it came to be that there are 40 standardized shades of gray in the RAL color system.

12tel Blick 2026 - Juli

Im Juli hat es ein paar Mal geregnet, gerade so, dass der Rasen wieder etwas grün wurde und schon hat uns die nächste Hitzewelle erfasst. Ich hoffe nur, sie dauert nicht so lange an wie die im Juni. Im Juli waren die Temperaturen teilweise richtig angenehm und wir konnten manche Dinge im Garten angehen. Bäume zurecht stutzen, ein Beet umgestalten, Holz schneiden. Die Obstbäume sind durch die Hitze irritiert und in einer Schutzreaktion (Selbsterhaltungstrieb) werfen sie überflüssige Früchte ab. Ganz schlimm treibt es die Zwetschke, da haben wir schon etliche große Kübel unreifes Fallobst eingesammelt. Schade. 

It rained a few times in July, just enough to make the lawn a bit green again, and then the next heat wave hit us. I just hope it doesn't last as long as the one in June. In July, the temperatures were sometimes really pleasant, and we were able to tackle some things in the garden: pruning trees, rearranging a flower bed, and cutting wood. The fruit trees are stressed by the heat and, as a protective reaction (self-preservation instinct), are dropping excess fruit. The plum trees are particularly bad; we've already collected several large buckets of unripe fallen fruit. What a shame.

1980s exhibition at Schallaburg Castle

Jeder hat ein Lieblings-Jahrzehnt, das einen nachhaltig geprägt hat. Bei mir waren es die 1980er Jahre. Da habe ich Matura (Abitur) gemacht und bin in eine andere Stadt wegen Studium gezogen. Endlich erwachsen und frei. Ich war unglaublich mutig und selbstbewusst. Die 80er waren ein tolles Jahrzehnt und es war uns auch bewusst, dass wir in einer tollen Zeit leben. Die Ausstellung von Erinnerungsstücken und Exponaten ist hervorragend gestaltet und sehenswert für alle, die in dieses Jahrzehnt nochmal eintauchen möchten.

Die Ausstellung findet auf der Schallaburg in Niederösterreich (Nähe St. Pölten) statt. Die Burg ist wunderschön restauriert und höchst sehenswert und daher fange ich mit ein paar Fotos von der Burg an. 

Everyone has a favorite decade that has had a lasting impact on them. For me, it was the 1980s. I graduated from high school and moved to another city to study. Finally, I was an adult and free. I was incredibly brave and self-confident. The '80s were a fantastic decade, and we're all aware that we live in a great time. The exhibition of memorabilia and artifacts is superbly designed and well worth seeing for anyone who wants to relive that decade. 

The exhibition is located at Schallaburg Castle in Lower Austria (near St. Pölten). The castle has been beautifully restored and is definitely worth a visit, so I'll start with a few photos of it.

W wie Wüste

oder eher W wie Wanderdüne. Zuerst schoss mir natürlich sofort Weihnachten und Wolle durch den Kopf, beides hielt ich für einen Julipost für ungeeignet. Doch nach einer Googlesuche nach Worten mit W, blieb ich bei Wüste hängen. Da war doch was. Genau, die Wanderdüne von El Jable auf Fuerteventura (HIER geht's zum Post). Ein Traumurlaub auf einer faszinierenden Insel auf den Kanaren bescherte uns ein tolles Erlebnis mit einem kleinen Stück Wüste.

W is for Wandering Dune

My first thoughts immediately jumped to the words Christmas (Weihnachten in german) and wool, both of which I considered unsuitable for a July post. But after a Google search for words beginning with W, I got stuck on desert. That rang a bell. Right, the wandering dune of El Jable in Fuerteventura (click HERE to the blogpost). A dream vacation on a fascinating Canary Island (Spain) gave us an impressive experience with a little piece of desert. 

Znaim - Znojmo

Am Vatertag haben wir einen Ausflug ins benachbarte Tschechien gemacht. Wir besuchten die mittelalterliche Stadt Znaim. Sie liegt etwa 75 km nördlich von Wien und ist somit nah genug für einen Tagesausflug. 

On Father's Day, we took a trip to neighboring Czechia. We visited the medieval town of Znojmo. It's located about 75 km (46 mi) north of Vienna and is therefore close enough for a day trip.

Nähmaschine benutzen

Im Juni war ich faul. Die Hitze hat mich zwar im Haus gehalten, aber leider auch sehr träge. Ich habe mir neue medizinische Coolpacks geleistet, die man natürlich frisch aus dem Tiefkühler nicht auf die Haut legen kann, weil viel zu frostig. Aus alten, zu Putzfetzen degradierten Geschirrtüchern, habe ich kleine Täschchen genäht. Das Körbchen mit den Täschchen steht auf dem Tiefkühler und man kann die Coolpacks gleich direkt in eines rein stecken. Bei der Hitze fühlt sich das herrlich im Nacken an.

In June I was lazy. The heat kept me indoors, but unfortunately it also made me very sluggish. I bought new medical cool packs, which of course you can't put on your skin fresh from the freezer because they're way too frosty. I sewed little bags out of old tea towels that had been reduced to cleaning scraps. The basket with the bags is on the freezer and you can put the cool packs straight into one. It feels wonderful on the back of your neck in this heat.  

Monatscollage Juni 2026

Monatsrückblick für Juni: 

1. Im Juni war Vatertag. Bei uns wird das so groß gefeiert wie Geburtstag oder Muttertag. Mein Mann hat ein schönes Frühstück auf der Terrasse bekommen und ein technisches Spielzeug. Unser Dorf ist von Wald umgeben und auch im Garten haben wir allerlei Getier. Er wollte schon immer eine Wildkamera haben, um dem nächtlichen Treiben zuzuschauen. Wildkameras sind ja nun nicht billig, aber ein Kommentar sagte, dass gewöhnliche Überwachungskameras für kleines Geld genauso gut sind. Also gekauft, mein Mann hat's montiert und seitdem wird morgens sofort am Tablet geschaut, was nachts im Garten los war. Er hat viel Freude damit :)
2. Und einen Vatertagsausflug gab es natürlich auch. 90 km nördlich von Wien liegt Znaim (CZ) und da sind wir hingefahren. Ein total süßes kleines historisches Städtchen mit Burg und Kloster auf einem windigen Hügel. Ich werde noch gesondert darüber berichten. Aber schön war's :)
3. Seit Wochen belagert uns eine Hitzewelle und der Pool wurde schon öfter benutzt als das ganze letzte Jahr. Abkühlung bringt er mit seinen 30°C aber auch nicht mehr.
4. Die Hitze von beinahe 40 Grad wirkte sich gut auf meine Gurkenzucht aus. Zum ersten Mal kann ich Gurken ernten. In früheren Jahren war es zu nass oder zu kalt oder was weiß ich. Ich freu mich drüber.
5. Dann habe ich noch eine Social-Media-Sache ausprobiert. Und zwar wird in einen Eimer ein Loch gebohrt und eine Tomatenpflanze verkehrt herum aufgehängt. Ich weiß nicht, ob man das gut erkennen kann, aber der Trieb macht eine Kurve und wächst nach oben. Das war für mich überraschend. Also weiß die Tomatenpflanze wo oben und unten ist. Clever!
6. Zucchiniernte beginnt. Wir ernähren uns quasi von Zucchini. Es gibt nichts, wo die nicht reinkommen. Ganz toll finde ich auch die Gießtöpfchen, die man neben den Pflanzen eingrabt und das Wasser gleich in die unteren Bodenschichten sickert und nicht oberflächlich verdunstet. Die Wurzeln wachsen tiefer in die Erde und holen sich von unten die Feuchtigkeit. 
7. Das Rosenbeet vor der Terrasse hat kleine Leuchtkörper bekommen. Die funktionieren mit Solarpanel und zaubern eine herrliche Stimmung im Dunkeln.

A retrospect of June: 

1. Father's Day was in June. We celebrate it as much as birthdays or Mother's Day. My husband got a lovely breakfast on the patio and a gadget. Our village is surrounded by forest, and we have all sorts of creatures in the garden. He'd always wanted a wildlife camera to watch their nighttime antics. Wildlife cameras aren't cheap, but someone commented that ordinary security cameras are just as good for a small price. So I bought one, my husband installed it, and since then, every morning he checks the iPad to see what happened in the garden during the night. He's really enjoying it :)
2. And of course, we also had a Father's Day trip. We drove to Znojmo (CZ), 90 km (56 mi) north of Vienna. A cute little historic town with a castle and monastery on a windy hill. I'll write a separate post about it. But it was lovely :) 
3. We've been battered by a heat wave for weeks now, and the pool has been used more often than in the whole of last year. Water temperature is 30°C (86 F), though, it's not really providing any relief from the heat anymore. 
4. The heat of almost 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) was great for my cucumber plants. For the first time, I can harvest cucumbers. In previous years, it was either too wet or too cold, or whatever. I'm so happy about it.
5. Then I tried a tip from social media. You drill a hole in a bucket and hang a tomato plant upside down in it. I don't know if you can see it very well, but the shoot curves and grows upwards. That was a surprise. So the tomato plant knows which way is up and which way is down. Clever!
6. The zucchini harvest has begun. We practically live on zucchini. There's nothing we don't put them in. I also really like the little watering pots that you bury next to the plants so the water seeps directly into the lower layers of soil instead of evaporating on the surface. The roots grow deeper into the soil and draw moisture from below.
7. The rose bed in front of the patio has been fitted with small lights. They work with solar panels and create a wonderful atmosphere in the dark.

12tel Blick 2026 - Juni

Im Juni traf uns eine Hitzewelle, gestern Wien 40°C. Hier bei uns am Land 37°C. Der Rasen verbrennt und wird braun und strohig. Der Pool hat 32°C und ist keine Abkühlung mehr. Ich gieße meine zwei Gemüsebeete und gehe ansonsten nicht raus. Wir haben keine Klimaanlage. Unser Haus ist historisch und hat 1 Meter dicke Wände. Man hält es auch so aus, wenn man rechtzeitig alles verdunkelt und die Sonne aussperrt. Dennoch zum Foto aufnehmen, musste ich auf den Dachboden. Gleicht einem Saunaaufguss. Zweimal, denn beim 1. Mal stimmte der Winkel wieder nicht. Ich hoffe ihr kommt gut durch die Hitze. 

We were hit by a heat wave in June; yesterday it was 40°C (104 F) in Vienna. Here in the countryside, it's 37°C (98 F). The lawn is burning, turning brown and straw-like. The pool is 32°C (89 F) and no longer offers any relief. I'm watering my two vegetable beds and otherwise staying indoors. We don't have air conditioning. Our house is historic and has walls a meter (1 yd) thick. It's bearable if you keep everything dark and out of the sun. Even so, I had to go up to the attic to take the photo. It's like a sauna. Twice, actually, because the angle was wrong the first time. I hope you're all coping well with the heat.
