| vor dem Schnitt - nach dem Schnitt im April - die 2. Blüte im August before the pruning - after the pruning in April - 2nd bloom in August |
We have a 16 year old shrub rose that was allowed to grow mostly as it wanted. Only occasionally I cut some branches. But now the rose was so big, that behind the bush was only a dark space where no one wanted to be anymore. Actually, there is a paved space for the deck chair, but through the darkness, the mosquitos feel comfortable. For a long time I hesitated and look up lot of garden tips, if one can cut away old thick trunks. But hop or drop, it has to be. So in April (before the spring bud break), the radical pruning took place, only a few thinner stems were allowed to remain and the side shoots were all shortened. And as you can see, that was not a problem for the rose. Fresh new shoots came down from below and bloomed again in June. But I forgot to take pictures. The right picture is from yesterday and that is already the second bloom, which of course turns out much smaller. My English roses and a modern rose met the same fate and all bloomed again in June. So don't be afraid of a radical pruning of your roses. If they were healthy and strong before then they will be strong afterwards.
